This study aims to explore the experiences of being a Korean professor in the US as a member of a multicultural academic society. The research questions are: 1) What led the participant to prepare for a faculty job as a Korean in the US? 2) What were the participant’s challenges and opportunities in their preparations? 3) How did the participant overcome challenges in terms of cultural differences? 4) What are the participant’s experiences as a foreign faculty member? The goals of this study are to explore and eventually to analyze narratives in terms of having a job in the US as a Korean scholar. The results indicate there exist interesting key components: 1) Outsiders and Others, 2) (in)evitability, 3) cultural literacy, and 4) nagging doubt. This study explored the professional career trajectory as a participation in other cultures according to one's perception, the gap between a sense of belonging as a student and as an expert, a sense of alienation from one's own culture, the will to participate in another culture, and acquisition of appropriate means for participation and a sense of belonging. The participant's narrative was constructed according to this trajectory. I believe that this study may contribute to provide an insight into phenomena related to the professional growth of multicultural faculty members in Korea.
